Music has had a place in the bedroom for as long as music could be played on demand–whether as an iPhone, boombox, or record player. OuiOurs, the leading online lingerie magazine, asked us for help with one of their brand extensions surrounding music we were thrilled. Their idea was simple; ask musicians, DJ’s, models, and artists to create thematic mixtapes. The mixes range from “Bedroom Dance Music” and “The Sexiest Songs" to “Songs to Break Up to”. Each mixtape in the series was commemorated with limited edition album artwork we created based on the theme.
Using the graphic language of music and instrumental iconography, we created a visual identity that appropriated elements from the brands' original identity while charging it with the energy and emotion of sound.
Repetition with variation is a recurring musical device. As part of the brand extensions identity, we introduced a mirage of patterns on repeat to both emphasize the identity as well as highlight the minor evolutions.
Each mix inspired self-contained artwork referencing the artist or theme of their music choices. We approached album art and supporting collateral as a flexible system for expression rather than with rigid consistency allowing for happy accidents.
Hailing from a long tradition of energetic, expressive album artwork, we combined handmade elements with vector graphics for each mix’s design. The result; provocative contemporary expressionism.
